Flipped Learning: Tips for Newly Qualified Online Teachers

Flipped Learning can be challenging for a newly qualified teacher, but nowadays, it has gained popularity and has proven effective.  However, it is essential to address some common misconceptions about this model, such as the belief that it requires technological skills or is suitable for specific subjects.
Flipped Learning can transform the virtual classroom into an engaging and interactive space, and here are some tips to help new teachers succeed in this innovative model.

1. Flipped Classroom Model
Flipped Learning gives traditional teaching methods a new perspective.  Students own their own learning content and are not just passive actors receiving information in class. Students can learn the content at home through materials and online resources like videos and promote their active learning.  This strategy allows students to learn at their own pace and be prepared to apply their knowledge during class time. Using this model in class helps teachers design lesson plans to engage students to be active and improve outcomes.

2. Create Engaging Pre-Class Content
Successfully applying Flipped Learning depends on the quality of pre-class content. For example, when creating videos, the teacher must consider using a script to ensure clarity and conciseness.  Tools like Edpuzzle or Loom can help teachers make their videos interactive by adding quizzes and commentary.  The teacher must keep videos short (3-5 minutes) to maintain student attention and engage them in learning. The teacher must focus on selecting materials directly related to the lesson's goals.

3. Foster Interactive In-Class Activities
In the flipped classroom, the activities are deepened in understanding through applications the teacher uses in class.  Zoom breakout rooms in online courses can serve as a venue for discussions and group projects.  Kahoot! can be used for interactive quizzes in online and face-to-face courses. Another interactive tool, Padlet, is used for collaborative brainstorming.  These tools can facilitate these activities and make students' learning more interactive and enjoyable.
Interactive activities help students achieve their goals and develop collaborative skills.  The teacher must plan activities to keep students engaged.

4. Support and Feedback
Applying Flipped Learning in class provides support and feedback, such as creating discussion forums for students to ask questions.  Continuous support helps students stay motivated and engaged; feedback is essential for learning.

5. Engaging deep-learning
Flipped Learning ensures students complete the pre-class work.  Establish clear expectations and hold students accountable.  It can be achieved through various methods, such as assigning graded assignments based on the pre-class materials, conducting quizzes to assess their understanding, or asking for the pre-class materials to encourage active engagement. Platforms like Quizlet or Edmodo can help teachers track student progress and understanding, maximize the effectiveness of in-class activities, and foster a sense of active participation.

6. Reflect and Adapt
Flipped Learning is a flexible and evolving model that adapts to teaching style and students' needs.  Improvement is essential to making the flipped classroom effective and responsive to student needs.

Flipped Learning helps students learn better and offers a way to engage and enhance their online and face-to-face learning experience. Teachers must understand the model, create engaging content, do interactive activities, and give support and feedback. Using Flipped Learning in class offers flexibility and creativity.
